ἀποσκιάσματος. Reading 1 first of all suggests “the shadow” or “the shadowing which is associated with the solstice.” But since the shortening of the days following the solstice is not called “shadowing” (ἀποσκίασμα), this interpretation is impossible. Therefore reading 1 is tolerable only if τροπῆς is translated non-technically as an adjective: “varying shadowing,” or if one assumes that Jas (or popular usage) had linked together half-understood terms with an astral reference without taking
